Award for work on IUU fishing

Project's best practices in scientific research relating to the fight against IUU fishing receive recognition at High Level conference.

In the framework of the GFCM High-level conference on MedFish4Ever initiatives: advances and renewed commitments (Marrakech, Morocco, 11–12 June 2019) GFCM promoted the celebration of the 2019 International Day for the fight against IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing) fishing focusing on the Mediterranean and Black Sea region.

The FishMPABlue2 project was awarded for Best Practices in Scientific Research relating to the fight against IUU fishing. The award, received by Antonio Di Franco from Ecoseas lab on behalf of the project, concerns the work carried out in the 11 pilot MPAs to assess poaching activity and small-scale fishers' perception of the threat that it poses. More specifically, FishMPABlue2 investigates:

  • How much IUU fishing is taking place in MPAs
  • How poaching and its drivers are perceived by legitimate MPA stakeholders
  • How stakeholders can be encouraged to participate in voluntary surveillance.

The relevance of the project's findings is not limited to the locations studied: it will help to form strategies to combat IUU fishing across the whole Mediterranean region.
